Anti Virals

If you have a tendency to get cold sores, you may want to keep some antiviral medication (either oral or topical) on hand – acquire from your doctor. An alternative that does seem to be helpful for many is Abreva and is found in drugstores. Any medication needs to be started at the first sign of an outbreak. At first tingle, take action.

Getting a Cosmetic Treatment?

Also, if you have had a cold sore in the past and plan to have cosmetic treatments such as fillers or laser, be sure to tell your doctor. Those procedures can cause an outbreak.

Prevention

Prevention is not always possible. Taking care of yourself, avoiding too much sun and avoiding close contact with someone who has a cold sore can help. Once you’ve had a cold sore, the virus stays in your system, keeping you susceptible.
