Fillers

Confused by all the different wrinkle fillers out there? We don't blame you. It can get a little overwhelming.

Here's a quick overview of what's being used throughout the country.

Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast - Natural collagen fillers used for finer surface lines.

Juvederm - Hyaluronic acid gel filler for wrinkles, lip plumping and light facial augmentation

Restylane & Perlane - Sister hyaluronic acid gel fillers for deeper wrinkles, lip augmentation and nasolabial folds

Radiesse - Calcium based product for nasolabial folds, cheek and chin augmentation and nose reshaping

Sculptra - Collagen catalyst for volume creation in many areas of the face. Not a filler.

Artefill - Permanent filler utilizing bovine (cow) collagen as a carrier (Not available in our office)

All fillers - and especially products such as Radiesse and Sculptra - are "injector dependent" in achieving the right results. Injection technique is more important than the selection of the product you choose because a poorly or incorrectly placed product will be noticeable for months or even years.

Be certain that your choice of physician takes into consideration experience and expertise. The longer-lasting the product, the more care required in placement. Due diligence is your responsibility.

Finally - The Reason Behind Rosacea

From University of California San Diego:

"Doctors can describe the symptoms of rosacea, a common inflammatory skin disease that causes facial redness and affects nearly 14 million Americans. They can tell patients what triggers can worsen their condition: spicy foods, heat, alcohol, even embarrassment. But until now, they could not explain what caused rosacea...

"In essence, the researchers found that over-production of two interactive inflammatory proteins results in excessive levels of a third protein that causes rosacea symptoms, “a trifecta of unfortunate factors in people with rosacea..."

Photo & Symptom List from Mayo Clinic

Signs and symptoms of rosacea include:

  • Red areas on your face
  • Small, red bumps or pustules on your nose, cheeks, forehead and chin (but not the same as whiteheads or blackheads)
  • Red, bulbous nose (rhinophyma)
  • Visible small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks
  • Burning or gritty sensation in your eyes (ocular rosacea)
  • Tendency to flush or blush easily

Rosacea usually appears in phases:

  • Pre-rosacea. Rosacea may begin as a simple tendency to flush or blush easily, then progress to a persistent redness in the central portion of your face, particularly your nose. This redness results from the dilation of blood vessels close to your skin's surface. This phase may sometimes be referred to as pre-rosacea.
  • Vascular rosacea. As signs and symptoms worsen, vascular rosacea may develop — small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks swell and become visible (telangiectasia). Your skin may become overly sensitive. Rosacea may also be accompanied by oily skin and dandruff.
  • Inflammatory rosacea. Small, red bumps or pustules may appear and persist, spreading across your nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. This is sometimes known as inflammatory rosacea

Collagen Stimulation for Skin

Why Collagen is Important

Collagen is the most important building block of the body, making up 75% of our skin.

The fibrils (or strands) of collagen protein support the skin's cells providing contour, strength and integrity of tissue. Weakening of collagen strands, natural age-induced collagen loss and the extra collagen loss caused by environmental and sun exposure are among the reasons we experience wrinkles, tissue thinning and loss of skin fullness or volume.

Patient Results may vary

There are two primary product categories for correcting these issues - Fillers and Stimulators

Filler or Stimulator?

Filler:
Today's skin fillers typically contain either harvested fat, collagen derived from bovine or human sources, hyaluronic acids or, as in the case of Radiesse, a type of calcium. All of these "fillers" provide instant results with varying lengths of longevity and specific area uses. Fillers are primarily designed to act as a substitute for collagen.

Stimulator:
A collagen stimulator acts very differently from a filler. It is not instant and it is not designed to take the place of collagen. A collagen stimulator does just what it says - stimulates the production of natural collagen.

(Illustration shows possible treatment zones)

Sculptra acts as a global collagen stimulator for the skin.

What this means is that the skin is actually prompted to begin production of new "replacement" or additional collagen in the areas Sculptra is injected. This happens as a result of the skin's response to the injected material. Sculptra is made of poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA), the same material used in dissolvable sutures. The PLLA is highly diluted in sterile water to help provide the "global" distribution throughout the skin with added xylocaine to make the injections more comfortable.
