ClearLight ™ Acne Therapy

With today's technology, there's no reason to walk around with pimples on your face or any other part of your body. Acne can be resolved completely or improved dramatically with available treatments usable by anyone at any age under most any circumstance.

New Treatment Option: ClearLightTM Acne Therapy

There is a new light-based system for the treatment of acne. It involves a short, completely painless treatment regimen with impressive results and no side effects or downtime.

ClearLight treatments destroy acne-causing bacteria within the skin. Applied in eight treatments over a four week period, most patients see a dramatic decrease in the number and severity of acne blemishes and lesions; some report significant improvements after only two or three sessions.

Typical Treatment

During treatment sessions, which last approximately 15 minutes, the patient lies comfortably while the high-intensity ClearLight illuminates the acne. Protective eyewear is used during all treatments. The ClearLight utilizes a unique spectrum of light that causes the acne bacteria to self-destruct, while having no effect on the normal skin. The therapy is suitable to treat all areas of the body, including the back, chest and face. Patients return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

How ClearLight Works

The ClearLight system's high-intensity blue-violet light activates special bacteria-fighting agents in your own body called porphyrins. These porphyrins start a chemical reaction that produces peroxide, which destroys the P. acnes bacteria (the root cause of inflamed blemishes).

Source-Lumenis

ClearLight is the first medical device designed to significantly clear inflammatory acne lesions in less than four weeks - without side effects.

Traditional acne treatments have various side effects. Topical therapies often cause redness, irritation and/or peeling. Topical-only treatment can be effective in the management of mild acne but rarely has the desired results for those suffering from constant and persistent acne.

Oral antibiotic therapies may have even more side effects. Although not to be discounted and frequently helpful in combined treatment, typical oral antibiotics alone simply don't "get the job done". Ongoing antibiotic use in women often results in imbalances that encourage yeast infections and requires self-monitoring of sun exposure.

ClearLight is suitable for all body areas, including the large areas of the back and shoulders and the sensitive beard area. It treats mild to moderate inflammatory acne. Severe acne requires more aggressive treatment and many cases will respond well to the newer "non-ablative" lasers. (Non-ablative lasers do not remove or burn skin, but work from within the skin.) See Smoothbeam and Vbeam links below under Related Treatments.

Goals of the ClearLight Acne Treatments

  • Prevent scarring
  • Reduce the number of painful legions
  • Limit disease duration
  • Minimize psychological stress and embarrassment.

No blood test or antibiotic is necessary. ClearLight is a systemic drug-free treatment with no downtime, no pain, no irritation, no problems with the sun or physical activities, and no side effects.

What is a ClearLight Treatment Like?

First, you should arrive with clean skin. Makeup must be removed prior to treatment. You will lie comfortably under a light for a period of minutes with protective goggles over your eyes. There is NO PAIN with ClearLight, no peeling, no irritation, no restriction from sun exposure and no one will even notice you have had a treatment. If you wear makeup, it can be reapplied directly following your treatment. It's really that simple.

Will I be Blemish-Free after my treatments?

Though the inflammation will be gone for the majority of patients at the end of the treatment series, you may experience a redness, where the inflamed blemish was located. This redness will dissipate in a short time. It is important to remember that ClearLight treats only inflamed mild to moderate acne blemishes. ClearLight is not designed to clear cystic and/or nodular acne or comedones and will provide little or no clearing of these lesions. Our office has a wide range of other effective treatments for more severe or resistant acne.

Acne is not a medically "curable" condition, but it is one that can be controlled and managed. You may require maintenance treatments to keep the clearing at an optimum level. This is in addtion to any at-home treatment program you have been advised to use.

What should I do between ClearLight Treatments?

You should avoid touching or picking your blemishes at all times. In addition, use a non-irritating anti-acne cleanser such as salicylic acid daily. You will be advised of correct products and proper home care during and after your treatment.

How do ClearLight Treatments for Acne compare to Topical Creams and Oral Antibiotics?

Topical and Oral Antibiotics - Treatment Time and Side Effects

Manufacturers' information on topical creams and oral antibiotics indicate that conventional treatment for acne sufferers have limitations and require, at least, 3 months of continuous treatment.
Some of these drugs are reported to have side effects that range from mild to quite severe. For example, Benzoyl Peroxide causes irritation to the skin, and topical antibiotics have a very low effective rate. Topical retinoids such as Retin-A and Renova are photosensitive. Oral antibiotics have a relapse of a few weeks to a couple months at the end of the therapy and the side effects include GIT, Vertigo, Vaginal Candiosis (yeast infections), Hepatitis, and Lupus. Accutane and Roaccutane cause severe skin and mucosal irritation, liver enzymes, blood lipids, night blindness, and depression.

Clear Light

The ClearLight acne treatment series is completed in four (4) weeks, with treatments lasting approximately 15 minutes each. Most importantly, ClearLight treatments have been shown to significantly decrease inflammatory acne lesions in a very high percentage of patients with no side effects.
